🌍 What is NationCrest?

NationCrest works out each player's country from their IP address while they are still connecting, then shows it wherever you want it. Use the placeholders in the tab, nametag or chat plugin you already run, or switch on the built in tab list and nametag prefixes if you have nothing else.

The lookup happens before the player is in the world and never on the main thread, so it never slows your server down. Once found, the country is remembered against the player, so it is ready the next time they join.

🚩 About Flag Emojis

Flag emojis do not render in vanilla Minecraft. The vanilla font has no glyphs for them, so they show up as missing character boxes. That is why the default display is the two letter code, like US, which works on every client with no resource pack.

Running a resource pack with a flag font? Map your own character per country in countries.yml and switch to custom mode, or use unicode mode if your pack covers flag emojis.

• %nationcrest_code%: two letter country code, like US
• %nationcrest_name%: full country name, like United States
• %nationcrest_flag%: the display string for the current mode, unformatted
• %nationcrest_display%: the display string with your prefix, suffix and colours applied

🗺️ The Country Database

MaxMind does not allow the GeoLite2 database to be redistributed, so it is not bundled. You have three options:

• Add a MaxMind licence key to config.yml. The plugin downloads the database on first start and keeps it refreshed
• Download GeoLite2-Country.mmdb yourself and drop it in the plugin folder
• Set provider to http and point it at any lookup service you use. The URL and JSON field are both configurable

Left on auto, the plugin uses the database when one is present and the HTTP service when not.

📋 Requirements

• Paper 1.21.4 or newer, tested up to 26.2. Paper only, plain Spigot is not supported
• Java 21
• PlaceholderAPI (optional, for the placeholders)

Behind a proxy? Make sure IP forwarding is set up, or every player resolves to the same address. The plugin warns you in console if it spots this.
